Pest Control Tips . . . Delivered with a Smile!

Rock of Ages

In the 1930s a meteorite fell from the night sky onto a Michigan farm. The farmer and his son found the crater it made when it crashed to earth and dug it up while it was still warm. For 50 years the farmer used the meteorite as a doorstop. When he sold the property, he told the buyer, David Mazurek, the story of the meteorite’s arrival. “It made a heck of a noise when it hit!”

For 30 more years it continued as a doorstop. Then Mazurek read about people finding and selling small meteorites. He wondered about his, so took it to Dr. Mona Sirbescu at Central Michigan University. She said “It’s the most valuable specimen I have ever held in my life, monetarily and scientifically.” The meteorite turned out to have a rare composition (lots of nickel) and is the 6th largest meteor to ever have landed in Michigan. After 80 years as just a doorstop, it was valued at $100,000.

Pest Patrol

The sight of a cockroach in a home inspires dread like few other insects. The bug is associated with filth. But that is not necessarily true of your home. Despite your diligent cleanliness and best efforts, roaches may have been transported from an infested place to your home (either a live pest or eggs) in a corrugated box, a lunch pail, backpack, or paper sack. They may have invaded your home from a nest outside.

Because cockroaches live and feed in areas that contain dangerous bacteria (dumpsters, drains and bathrooms) they can contaminate food preparation areas with disease-causing germs. You don’t have to live with them. The preventative measures you can do yourself revolve around depriving them of food, water and shelter. However, what makes it especially hard to eradicate a cockroach infestation is their extreme resilience. They can live a week without a head, flatten their bodies to fit through narrow openings, hold their breath for 40 minutes, withstand temperatures down to freezing and go without food for 3 months.

If the population becomes established, it is can be difficult to eradicate them without expert help. Especially the German roach! (That one is more work (and an additional service) to exterminate. It all starts with a thorough inspection of your property inside and out to spot attractants and find nests. Then regular pest control service will keep this species in check. Cockroach treatment is included in our quarterly pest control maintenance program. If you are not already receiving this service, call for details and prices!

Reindeer Like Rudolph

Reindeer hold the record as the most widely nomadic of all mammals – up to 3,000 miles a year. They are fast too – 48 mph on land and 6 mph in water.

And reindeer have evolved a unique way for the herd to stay in contact, especially during snowstorms or fog. They have tendon in their feet that makes a clicking sound as they walk. A herd of migrating reindeer sounds like a group of Spanish castanet musicians!

More Dumb Criminals

A young (dumb) thief robbed a man of his wallet and cell phone in a public restroom. He picked the wrong place and the wrong man. The Harrisburg Holiday Inn was hosting a police convention. Several signs boldly announced, “Welcome Police Officers”! The victim he selected was an ex-cop who called out to the other 300 other cops nearby. After the rapid arrest the victim said, “He’s probably the dumbest criminal in Pennsylvania.”
