Frequently Asked Questions

Texas rats are one of the most unwelcome rodents in Texas homes. Not only can they directly transmit over a dozen diseases but they can cause structural damage to your home. The importance of rodent prevention cannot be overstated when it comes to Texas rats.
We recommend you inspect your property at least twice a year for signs of rat infestation. This includes evidence of fur, footprints, or droppings near any possible openings or entry points.

If you discover that you have a rat infestation, you should know that do-it-yourself rat traps/poisons are not all created equal. Unfortunately, without proper care and know-how, you may be doing more harm than good.

If not handled adequately a Texas rat infestation could easily get out of control. We recommend you contact a professional rodent extermination service such as SafePro Pest Control.

An extermination expert should provide a thorough investigation of your property (inside and out) before recommending the most effective rodent control method for your situation.

Choose a reputable extermination service that has a reputation for excellent customer satisfaction. We at Safe Pro Pest Control are proud to share that we have won Angie's List award for pest control in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex for more than eight years and counting.

Don’t hesitate to give us a call even if you suspect you have a rodent problem. We offer free inspections and our experts are highly trained and certified to handle all your pest control needs.

At first, all rats may look the same, but there are significant differences in the types of rats we see here in Texas. Depending on the species and the extent of the infestation, the treatment method may vary.

The two most common varieties of rats in Texas are Norway rats and roof or black rats.

Norway rats weigh from seven to 18 ounces. They are typically 11 to 19 inches long including the tail.

Roof rats are generally smaller than Norway rats. They weigh between five and 10 ounces. Their total length is similar to that of the Norway rats, varying from 12 to 18 inches including the tail.

If you suspect you have rats on your property, we understand the desire to do something about it immediately. However, depending on the breed and the significance of the infestation, do-it-yourself methods may be ineffective.

If a particular home method only has the ability to target one or two rats at a time, you may discover that you’ve left the remaining rats to proliferate and continue to spread contagious diseases and destroy your home's structure.

The best cure for rats is to make your property unappealing to rats in the first place.

Examine your home and garden for the following:

  • Remove food sources and possible nesting places
  • Seal all possible entrances
  • Keep your house and garden clear of debris
  • Call a professional rat extermination service if you suspect you have a rat infestation

Safe Pro Pest Control is a professional rat eradication service in Texas that performs a thorough inspection of your home or commercial buildings to recommend the best eradication method for your particular pest problem.

The Norway rat and the roof rat are the two most common varieties of rats in Texas.

Norway rats have a bi-colored tail, a rounded blunt nose, prominent black eyes, and short ears. The fur on their belly is lighter in color, usually gray or white, and is speckled with black hairs.
Because of their light build, roof rats are superb climbers.

Roof rats are also excellent climbers and have been known for climbing trees to get access to houses via the roof, hence the name. Roof rats have a dark brown or black underside with a lighter underbelly. The nose of a roof rat is sharp, and the ears and eyes are larger than those of a Norway rat.

Texas has a warm, subtropical climate, which makes it a great place for rats to live. Moderate winters and long, warm summers help rats flourish as they are prolific breeders.

Since rats spend the majority of their time looking for food outside, when the weather does get cooler, they will attempt to find warmth and food indoors. Typically in the winter months, rats will spend 80 percent of their time hunkered down in warm and comfortable areas, and only 20% of their time looking for food outside. Rats generally stay away from humans and prefer building their nests in less populated areas like walls on the ground floor or in the attic.
